The following HP Deskjet 3056A printer/scanner was purchased recently for use with all WOBIK-related projects (we scan a lot of documents around here!):

Our previous printer/scanner, HP OfficeJet J4550 all-in-one, pictured below, was acquired in the year 2010 and is no longer in working condition. We started having trouble with device when it would, intermittently, display an error message indicating that the ink cartridges were not connected correctly (even though they were). We struggled with that issue for about a year before, somewhat recently, the device starting displaying an error message indicating that there was a paper jam (even though there wasn't).
It might seem that those errors would not effect "scanning" but they do because when an error message is displayed the device will not conduct any function regardless of whether or not the error is related to the desired function:

The J4500 might have been a better device (when it would work) but the 3056A was new-in-box (although not new in the sense of newly released from HP) and appears to work efficiently and effectively and the price, for this location in the world (were electronics are marked up sometimes by as much as 300%), was not bad and it came with a good warranty. The HP software that came with 3056A was for Windows 7 but we were able to download the HP software for Windows 8 at the HP Support website. (HP typically has available pre and post versions of software for all of their printers/scanners.)
A third photograph of both devices together, HP Deskjet 3056A & HP OfficeJet J4550, is attached below.

Costs for the new device were covered by the honorable Bruce Steadman.
