Point: The never-ending 'birth' story (by Tom Fife)

Over the course of the past few years, there has been a subterranean discussion about the legitimacy of the presidency of Barack Obama.

This is a story few in the media are willing to touch. Still, questions about Obama persist and have given rise to what the left sneeringly calls the "birther" movement.

Officially, the White House holds that Obama was born in Hawaii.

It even posted a birth certificate on the White House website after Donald Trump pressed Obama to produce one.

And posting the certificate seemed to calm debate for a while. But now it is heating up again as evidence the president's documents may be forged begins to make its way into the public conversation.

Back on March 1, Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpiao released the initial findings from his "Cold Case Posse," a volunteer group of law enforcement folks working together to validate Obama's documentation.

In his press conference, Arpiao detailed evidence he believes calls into question the validity of the birth certificate.

Arpaio's "posse" also announced it believes Obama's draft card is a forgery. Further, Obama's Social Security number comes from Connecticut and has no relationship to anywhere he lived growing up.

Rational people are beginning to ask the question, "Who is this guy?"

And the latest information on the Obama birth saga was just released on "Breitbart.com" where a 1970s pamphlet promoting Obama's first book, "Journeys in Black and White," was unveiled.

The pamphlet states Obama was "born in Keyna and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii." This biography appears alongside other authors of the day, including former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill and basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Arpaio says there is more to come. His "posse" has gathered evidence from all over the world that Arpaio says will be released soon. So, in spite of a desire among the media and liberals that this story simply go away, it clearly will not. When viewed with a jaundiced eye, the Obama administration's prosecution of Arpaio for "racial profiling" can easily be seen as an effort to silence the sheriff.

I'm just the messenger. Even Rush Limbaugh recently discussed Obama's Social Security number when he asked one caller: "What are your thoughts on the fact Obama's Social Security number is from Connecticut and he's never been there?" Is any of this true? Did Barack Obama supply phony documents when he ran for the presidency?

Suppose for a moment that he did. Then what? Does this mean all documents carrying Obama's signature are invalid? Would his entire administration be tossed out? Would Joe Biden be elevated to the presidency? What is the definition of "natural born?" Will Sheriff Arpaio someday "perp-walk" Obama from the White House?

Will once-fawning media feast upon the bones of this once-powerful world leader? Could America withstand the removal of Obama from office for constitutional reasons? Would we be thrown into civil war?

I'm beginning to understand why nobody wants to touch this story. ...

Counterpoint: It's a tale from the nether regions (by Joe Alschule)

I'm embarrassed for people who can't keep life or politics in a proper perspective.

I'm embarrassed for people who engage in horrible smears without concern or regard for the truth.

I'm especially embarrassed for those who peddle lies in order to divide people and cause them to act against their own interests.

I'm mostly embarrassed for Tom, who lends his voice to this sort of trash.

I don't really understand why Tom has descended to this low level of discourse, but I do know that it's disturbing and an insult to the intelligence of the readers of Point/Counterpoint.

I can only imagine that Tom must be spending too much time trolling around in the dark, dank nether regions of the Internet, where the crazies roam free and babble their lies and nonsense back and forth to each other."
