Mohamed Morsi gave himself dictatorial powers and placed himself above the jurisdiction of the Egyptian courts. Did Morsi become the modern Pharaoh of Egypt as part of his leadership plans for the Muslim Brotherhood, or did Morsi follow the Imperial Presidency example that has been set by Barack Obama?
Morsi declared himself Dictator the day after President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton, and others hailed Morsi for his role in the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Palestine. Morsi is calling for hope and change just as Obama has.
“I don’t seek to grab legislative power,” Mr. Morsi said. “We’re moving on a clear path, we are walking in a clear direction. And we have a big, clear goal: the new Egypt.”
Even The New York Times expressed concern that the Obama White House has not strongly spoken out against Morsi’s dictatorial power grab.
But the White House was notably silent after it had earlier this week extolled the emerging relationship between President Obama and Mr. Morsi and credited a series of telephone calls between the two men with helping to mediate the cease-fire in Gaza.
For Mr. Morsi, who seemed to be saying to the nation that it needed to surrender the last checks on his power in order to save democracy from Mubarak-era judges, the challenge was to convince Egyptians that the ends justified his means.
Bloomberg News reported,
The moves mark the latest push by the Islamist president to wrest power away from a judiciary that the Brotherhood has argued is biased against him. The group said it supported his latest decisions and considers anyone who objects to them as “selling the blood of the martyrs,” the state-run Middle East News Agency said, citing Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan.
Obama made it clear in October 2011 that he is our dictator. Obama declared that he can rewrite our laws and does not need Congress to write or to pass laws. Obama’s new mantra became “We can’t wait!” Obama said that if Congress will not act quickly to pass the laws he wants and as quickly as he wants, he will make those laws by his own power.
