U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Gainesville, has drawn national attention and scrutiny in recent days for comments questioning the authenticity of the President Barack Obama's birth certificate and declaring as "racist" a tanning bed tax that's part of the Affordable Care Act.
Yoho touched on those issues, along with the farm bill, the federal deficit and the Defense of Marriage Act, while answering questions for about an hour at a joint tea party meeting last Saturday at Gainesville's Countryside Baptist Church.
Audio recordings of his comments went up online and the response included headlines such as "House GOPer Ted Yoho goes birther" on Salon.com and "Rep. Ted Yoho: Tanning tax is a racist tax — against white people" on the Washington Post web site. [...]
Alachua County Commissioner Susan Baird, who also attended the event, defended Yoho.
Baird said she would support a bill calling for another look at the president's birth certificate. Baird said she doesn't see it as a partisan issue but as a matter of transparency.
