Palin urges grassroots at conservative summit to support impeachment of Obama

    The Washington Times

    Valerie Richardson
    7/19/2014

    Excerpt:

DENVER — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin urged the grassroots Saturday to support her call for the impeachment of President Obama, imploring conservatives to push the idea with Congress.

“There’s only one remedy for a president who commits high crimes and misdemeanors, and it’s impeachment,” said Ms. Palin. “It’s the I word. You don’t need some fancy law degree hanging on your wall there to know laws are not being enforced today. Illegal immigrants all over the world also know that.”

The former Republican vice-presidential candidate spoke to a crowd here at the Western Conservative Summit, sponsored by the Centennial Institute.

Ms. Palin drew headlines two weeks ago when she called for the president’s impeachment, citing the flood of border-crossing children as the last straw, but House Speaker John Boehner quickly put the kibosh on the proposal, saying, “I disagree.”

“Alone, not defending borders is dereliction of duty, violating the oath of office,” said Ms. Palin. “If that’s not impeachable, nothing is. If he’s not impeachable no one is.”

    Impeachment talk grows

    Examiner

    Anthony Martin, Conservative Examiner
    7/19/2014

    Excerpt:

After six years of suffering through a truckload of illegal activity by Barack Obama and top administration officials, a few voices of the loyal opposition are finally talking about the possibility of impeachment. One of these is former Alaska Governor and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

So egregious has been Obama's lawlessness that Palin and others maintain that there is no adequate remedy to stop it other than impeachment and removal from office. But what, precisely, has Obama done that rises to the level of "high crimes and misdemeanors" -- the term used by the Constitution to denote the rationale for impeachment?

To name all of Obama's illegal acts would be too lengthy and laborious to bother with. There are dozens of such crimes. The top contenders would be the violation of the separation of powers as mandated by the Constitution, seizing unilateral power that is the domain of the Congress alone, and using the IRS as his personal political arm to go after opponents such as conservatives, libertarians, the Tea Party, Christian organizations, and many others. True enough that Congress passed Obamacare on a purely party-line vote. But once the law was passed Obama went to work to change it with no input from Congress whatsoever. This is an illegal use of presidential power. Further, Obama has made it clear that he has no intention of obeying court orders, that he is above the law, and that laws he considers "unconstitutional" have no authority over him, even if there is a court order. Only the Supreme Court can decide what is ultimately Constitutional, not a president. And with regard to the IRS scandal, Obama's actions are so dangerous to freedom, so outrageous, so thoroughly cynical, that such actions do, indeed, demand further action.

But these are only the tip of the iceberg. It is thus fully understandable as to why people like Palin would call for Obama's impeachment.

However, is such a course of action the most prudent one at this point in our history? There is where the rub comes in. Having adequate legal justification for taking such a step does not necessarily mean that it is the most prudent step. There are extenuating circumstances that demand caution in this realm. It is not that I do not support impeachment but that I see several pitfalls in taking that approach that could weaken our position in the fallout. If we are going down this trail, it is best to do so with our eyes wide open.

The most obvious of these extenuating circumstances is the fact that Obama's Party controls the Senate. Impeachment begins in the House, but the Senate must agree in order to move forward with the process. So far, the Democrats have demonstrated on a regular basis that they will walk in tandem with Obama no matter what. In the current political atmosphere in Washington, it is highly unlikely that the Senate would even remotely entertain the notion of impeaching Barack Obama. And we can be 100 percent certain that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would not even allow the impeachment question to make it to the floor of the Senate for a vote. Thus, like so many bills House Republicans have passed and sent to the Senate for approval, Reid would just sit on it and let it die on the vine.

Things have changed drastically in America in the years since Congress was poised to impeach Richard Nixon in 1974. Representatives in Congress actually had some personal integrity at the time, both Republicans and Democrats. It was the Republicans, in fact, that forced Nixon's resignation once they saw that he had lied to the American people. And when Nixon lost the support of Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., impeachment was inevitable, and Nixon decided to resign rather than face forced removal from office.

Similarly many Democrats voted in favor of impeaching Bill Clinton in the late 1990s after he lied in a court of law. And Clinton was, indeed, impeached although there were not enough Democrat votes to remove him from office (impeachment and removal from office are two separate issues).

But today integrity is hard to find. When it comes to Obama there are no morals, no ethics, no honesty, no integrity. It is all about ideology, and the Democrats, thus, will follow Obama to the ends of the earth even if he were shown to be a mass murderer. They will defend Obama to the death, making the most ludicrous excuses possible to explain his lawless behavior. Thus, they do not care about high crimes and misdemeanors. They do not care that a sitting president consistently violates the law. They do not care about the daily lies that proceed from the lips of an ethically challenged president. They want his agenda shoved down our throats, even though it takes one of the most corrupt chief executives the country has ever seen in order to do so.

On the other side of the aisle, some of the president's foes have serious questions about the wisdom of impeachment as well. Who would Biden pick to be his Vice President should Obama be removed from office? This issue is infinitely more important than most people realize. There are numerous landmines and pitfalls here. And do they want to become known as the Party that supported the removal from office the nation's first black president? Everyone knows a smear narrative will be rolled out should this happen. It would be all about race according to the progressive/collectivist cabal. And the mainstream media would help them promote that theme.
