Arizona Electoral College electors question Obama birth certificate

    The Hill

    Justin Sink
    12/17/2012

    Excerpt:

Three electors casting Arizona's Electoral College votes on Monday used the moment to again question whether President Obama was born in the United States.

The Electoral College ceremony, which occurred in state capitals across the nation Monday, requires electors from each of the states to officially cast their electoral votes in the presidential and vice presidential contest.

According to the Associated Press, state Republican Party chairman Tom Morrissey and two other Electoral College members used the ceremony to forward the conspiracy theory that suggests Obama was not born in Hawaii.

College member Don Ascoli, a former Republican Party chairman in Gila County, said he didn't think Obama was "properly vetted as a legitimate candidate for president."

The White House has released the president's long-form birth certificate, and officials in Hawaii have affirmed that records show the president having been born there.

While Arizona's 11 electors — including the three "birthers" — all went to Mitt Romney, President Obama is expected to earn 332 electoral votes to Romney's 206. A candidate needs 270 votes to prevail.

Obama birth issue raised by 3 Arizona electors

    azcentral

Associated Press Mon Dec 17, 2012

    Excerpt:

Several Republican Party officials serving as Electoral College members for Arizona questioned President Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president, voicing concerns that later drew disavowals from Gov. Jan Brewer and another Republican elected official.

All 11 Arizona electors cast their votes for defeated Republican nominee Mitt Romney, who won the state’s popular vote. The slots — awarded to states according to the size of their congressional delegations — generally go to party loyalists and activists.

State Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey and two current or former GOP county chairmen spoke up during the ceremony to voice doubts about Obama’s eligibility as a native-born U.S. citizen.

“I am signing this document with concern about the legitimacy of the birth certificate that I have seen presented by Barack Hussein Obama,” Morrissey said.

College member Don Ascoli, who recently finished serving as Republican Party chairman in Gila County, said he didn’t think Obama was “properly vetted as a legitimate candidate for president.”

Arizona Electors Question Barack Obama Birth Certificate

      The Huffington Post

      12/17/2012

      Excerpt:

The chairman of the Arizona Republican Party and two other Arizona members of the Electoral College on Monday questioned President Barack Obama's birth certificate during the formal casting of the state's electoral votes.

Arizona GOP Chairman Tom Morrissey said during the state's Electoral College meeting that Obama did not produce a "legitimate" birth certificate, KNAU reports. Morrissey's comments came as presidential electors nationwide formally elected Obama over Republican Mitt Romney.

"I'm not satisfied with what I've seen," Morrissey said during the meeting. "I think for somebody in the president's position to not have produced a document that looks more legitimate, I have a problem with that."

Morrissey was joined in doubting Obama's citizenship by two other Arizona electors, Gila County Republican Party Chairman Don Ascoli and former Graham County Republican Chairman John D. Rhodes, the Associated Press reports. Ascoli questioned whether Obama had been"properly vetted as a legitimate candidate for president."

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who has vetoed bills to require presidential candidates to show a birth certificate to Arizona's secretary of state, said she disagreed with the trio's stance. Secretary of State Ken Bennett (R), the presiding officer of the Arizona Electoral College, also said he disagreed with what the three said. In May, Bennett had threatened to block Obama from appearing on the Arizona ballot unless he produced a birth certificate that met Bennett's satisfaction. Bennett later said he would not not place Obama on the state's presidential ballot.
