Cardon takes another swing at the Obama birth-certificate question

    Arizona Central, AZ/DC Blog

    Excerpt:

"Republican Senate candidate Wil Cardon last week gave another explanation of his views on President Barack Obama's citizenship status, this time saying "to the naked eye ... it looks like he qualifies for the ballot."

Though his remarks came closer to explicitly acknowledging the legitimacy of Obama's birth certificate, Cardon again qualified that "I'm not the guy out studying this issue."

Cardon, a Mesa investor, was asked Wednesday on Barbara Espinosa's "Hair on Fire" radio program on KFNX-AM (1100) to explain the seeming distance between his past on-the-record positions regarding Obama's eligibility to hold the White House and his spokeswoman's unequivocal statement that he "believes President Obama was duly elected to the Office of the President because he is a citizen of this country.”

Obama last year released his long-term birth certificate, hoping to quiet the right-wing conspiracy-theorists known as "birthers" who claim that he was born in Kenya, not Hawaii, and thus is not a natural-born U.S. citizen as required by the U.S. Constitution.

Espinosa, whose blog includes a post that asks if Obama is "America's first Muslim president," read a question from a listener who wanted to know if Cardon would "support an investigation of Barack Obama's unlawful citizenship and debunked forged birth certificate."

Espinosa added: "I really think that Barack Obama could stand up on a world stage, call a world press conference, and say, 'Hey, suckers, I was born in Kenya. I am not an American. I never have been, never was. I am a Marxist personified and what are you jokers going to do about it?' And I think everybody would applaud, because I just think they have a Kool-Aid mind."

First, Cardon said, "I haven't been saying anything different from my spokesperson."

Then, Cardon said: "I can think of thousands of reasons why Barack Obama shouldn't continue on or have a second term, should be a one-term president. To the naked eye, and I'm not the guy out studying this issue, it looks like he qualifies for the ballot. That's what secretaries of state are supposed to be doing, who certify the ballots, and that's not my job. My job is to run for the Senate and make sure, and help, the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney hopefully, get to the presidency. And spending a lot of time on that issue, in my view, isn't the most appropriate or best use of my time to defeat Barack Obama."

In April, Cardon told The Arizona Republic that he wasn't sure if Obama had satisfied the qualifications for office: "I haven't been in the middle of that inspection. I'm running my own race right now, not worrying about Obama's race."
