Drama brewing at the GOP convention

    Excerpt:

"On several fronts drama is brewing for next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa.

In February the talk centered on the distinct possibility of a brokered convention, with no candidate having reached the required number of delegates. Such a scenario would throw the convention into high drama with no guarantee as to who would emerge the winner.

Such a scenario fizzled, however, when Mitt Romney surpassed the minimum number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul suspended their campaigns.

While there is yet some talk about delegates defecting from the Romney ranks and going with Ron Paul, most GOP analysts do not give such a scenario much credence. And with Romney's choice of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., as his running mate, a choice that has galvanized the conservative base, most believe that Romney has the nomination in his pocket.

The real drama, however, is brewing on three fronts.

Sources among government watchdog groups have stated that security in Tampa will be on heightened alert due to threats of violence during the convention. The city of Tampa took steps to keep crowds away from the site of the convention by blocking off access. No one will be allowed access unless they pass a comprehensive screening process.

The reason for these extraordinary measures is simple. Credible threats have been received from multiple sources. The New Black Panthers, for example, threatened to wreak havoc at the convention. The Occupy Wall Street protest group also suggested they may stage significant demonstrations. But another source of threats that has received little attention in the media, according to watchdogs, came from terrorist organizations overseas which have satellite operations in the United States.

Another source of potential drama is the news that Vice President Joe Biden will be in Tampa Monday and Tuesday, supposedly, according to the prevailing political wisdom, to steal some of the thunder a political convention produces in the media. But the GOP issued its own threat to Democrats, stating that any attempt by the Obama campaign to interrupt the convention will be paid back ten-fold during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

In addition, weather watchers have noted that tropical storms are heating up in the Atlantic after a three-month period of calm. If these storms produce hurricanes, then such a storm could pose a direct threat to Tampa that could be far more damaging than any of the threats cited above."
