Truck Convoy Protest Causing Traffic Problems on Capital Beltway

      CBS-DC

      10/11/2013

      Excerpt:

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A convoy of tractor-trailers planning to circle the Capital Beltway in protest of the federal government has begun its descent on the Washington area and is causing some traffic problems for the morning commute.

The “Truckers Ride for the Constitution,” which organizer Zeeda Andrews said could attract as many as 3,000 big rigs to the nation’s capital, only had about 30 participants as of 10 a.m.

Andrews insists the convoy is meant to be a peaceful protest rather than a traffic clog. The organizer said Thursday that reports of the trucks planning to take up three lanes of the Beltway were inaccurate, and that they should only occupy one lane of traffic.

But WNEW’s John Domen, who began following the trucks as they drove north past a truck stop on Interstate-95 in Dumfries, Va., said trucks were taking up all four lanes of the Inner Loop of the Beltway in Annandale, Va. and had slowed to 10 mph, blocking traffic from getting by.

A Virginia State Police officer approached the small convoy and pulled over one truck to the shoulder. The other three trucks also pulled over to the side of the road near Exit 52A. Police say they only warned the drivers and didn’t write any tickets.

The trucks have resumed their drive along the Beltway at about 40 mph, taking up three right lanes and letting traffic by in the far left lane. The posted speed limit for the entire 64-mile length of the interstate is 55 mph.

Some of the trucks are displaying flags and signs with a ‘#T2SDA’ hashtag as part of the demonstration that organizers say is a show of solidarity against what Andrews sees as an assault by the federal government on the U.S. Constitution.

Big rig operators met at a travel plaza off Exit 98 on Interstate-95 in Doswell, Va., near King’s Dominion, early Friday morning and began their trek to the nation’s capital. The demonstration is supposed to continue through Sunday.

Sgt. Mark Black, spokesman for the Maryland State Police, said Thursday that authorities were aware of the planned demonstration and were prepared to help handle it. Virginia State Police say additional troopers are on patrol this weekend to respond to any incidents that may arise.

"Constitution" Rally Truckers Stopped After Slowing Capital Beltway Traffic

Truckers are protesting industry regulations, expressing frustration with elected leaders

          NBC Washington

          10/11/2013

          Excerpt:

Truckers slowed traffic on the Beltway Friday to express their frustration with the nation's political leaders, as well as policies regulating the trucking industry.

Dozens of drivers of tractor-trailers and pickup trucks expressed their frustration over trucking industry regulations and the government shutdown Friday in a way that was guaranteed to get attention: They slowed traffic on Washington's Beltway in a rolling protest.

Those participating in the "Truckers Ride for the Constitution" rally had said they planned to circle the inner loop of the Capital Beltway "three lanes deep" Friday morning.

About 30 commercial vehicles and 15 pickup trucks, many sporting U.S. flags and "#T2SDA" placards, crossed over into Maryland on I-495 northbound at around 8 a.m., Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said.

Nearly an hour later, four tractor-trailers began driving side-by-side slowed traffic to 15 mph. State troopers stopped the trucks at mile marker 53 and warned them not to impede traffic, Geller says. They were not given a ticket and were allowed to continue.

Around 10:15 a.m., about a dozen truckers returned to Virginia via the westbound lanes of the inner loop, but they were met with already congested traffic caused by heavy volume and weather conditions.

Geller says there have been no major incidents as a result of the convoys.

A Facebook page for the rally had more than 59,000 likes and about 3,000 RSVPs -- a far cry from the number of actual participants seen Friday.

Organizers say the three-day rally was scheduled for a holiday weekend to reduce harm and to allow others to participate in their cause.

A Virginia State Police spokesperson says additional troopers will work through the weekend to respond to any incidents that may arise.

              Truckers roar into D.C.

Big rigs invade nation's capital to protest assault on Constitution

              WND

              10/11/2013

              Excerpt:

Dozens of big-rig drivers and long-haul truckers took to the highways around Washington, D.C., Friday to protest what they describe as extra-constitutional actions of Congress and the president, launching a weekend of similar demonstrations.

CBS reported that at one point truckers were side-by-side across four lanes of Interstate 95 and were blocking traffic until a Virginia State Police officer pulled them over.

After talking with the officer, the truckers resumed driving at a speed of about 40 mph, up from the 10 mph they had been going, the report said.

The truckers met at a travel plaza near Doswell, Va., to launch their protest on the Capital Beltway of what they view as an out of control government.

WTVR-TV in Richmond, Va., reported police said as long as the truckers follow the law, there will be no intervention.

The station sent a reporter to a truck stop used as a staging area and came away with a few pointed comments about Washington politics.

“The way Congress is doing, they’ve basically throwed our Constitution in the trash,” Alabama trucker Brad Higgins told the station.

Stanley Levy of Ohio said: “Every time I turn around, I’m paying taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes. Come on, we’re 17 trillion dollars in debt – it’s like a credit card.”

And Tom Null from Indiana told the station: “We’re going to participate in the demonstration around the beltway in D.C. We just want to let government know that we’re tired of them doing unconstitutional things constantly. We don’t like the way the banking is going, with the Fed printing $85 billion dollars every month, diluting our money. My tires are costing 500 bucks apiece now.”

It’s just the latest in a series of citizen protests in Washington to try to get the attention of President Obama and Congress amid inside-the-beltway fights over Obamacare, funding the military, the administration’s shutdown of national parks, the poor economy and other issues.

A group called “2 Million Bikers to D.C.,” that held a Sept. 11 rally in Washington voiced its support for the “Truckers to Shut Down America,” which also has been called “Ride for the Constitution,” in a statement on its Facebook page.

The bikers also plan to join a rally by vets in Washington, the “Million Vet March on the Memorials, which is set for Sunday.

An Internet service detailing information about commutes in Washington reported there had been several accidents and delays but no major closures or other impacts.

This link is to a series of traffic cameras around Washington.

A trucker from Georgia told WND that members of Congress are not keeping their oath of office to protect the nation and the Constitution.

“If they refused to obey their oath and uphold the law we the people would find a way,” said Earl Conlon. “What is important is that the truckers and patriot’s voices get heard.”

Online, the bikers group pointed out that without truckers, consumers would have nothing.

They wrote: “If you own it – a trucker brought it to where you could buy it. If you have a garden the seed for that garden came by truck. The only thing the truck didn’t deliver was the plot of ground.”

The truckers’ eventwas organized loosely on Facebook pages. Sympathetic demonstrations also were planned in other parts of the country for those unable to make the drive to Washington.

Supporters expected several thousand trucks in Washington, which because of the size of the mostly 18-wheelers could create a significant impact on Washington traffic.

One of the Facebook pages had more than 123,000 “likes.”

“Truckers Ride for the Constitution” co-organizer Benn Pam believes that the convergence of three rallies in D.C. on the same weekend could make things interesting.

“It is about to hit the fan in big chunks. ’2 Million Bikers to D.C.’ is organizing for a protective detail for WWII veterans to monuments,” Pam said.

Pam added that it’s time for the American people to make their will known.

“The United States is now a dictatorship, ruled by the decrees of one man. Spy agencies dominate the government and the people. There is no rule of law. The Constitution is shredded,” Pam said. “It’s time to rise up.”
