Chris Matthews Tingle-Itis’? O’Reilly, Carlson Take on How Late Night Hosts Treat Obama

Bill O’Reilly, Gretchen Carlson, and Bernard McGuirk took on a new piece this week from the head writer of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson who said the current crop of late night hosts is too fearful of backlash to get really tough on President Obama, even going so far as to suggest it might be due to racism. And while O’Reilly and crew didn’t go that far, they did agree that there is a pretty obvious political bias in late night.

O’Reilly did note Obama is “far and away… the butt of most of the late night jokes,” but McGuirk said there’s “a lot of trepidation” among these hosts because either they don’t want to offend too much or they have Chris Matthews tingle-itis” and don’t want to hit him too hard.

Carlson and McGuirk noted jokes at the expense of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were easy because of their personalities and personal lives, and so “they curtail their comments to make him look better.” O’Reilly agreed they don’t get personal, but the fact is, he said, “you can’t make personal comments about the first black President of the United States.”
