WaPo Columnist: Dem’s Demagoguery on Pay Equity ‘Revolting’

    Mediaite

    Evan McMurry
    4/10/2014

    Excerpt:

Ruth Marcus, a left-leaning columnist for the Washington Post, wrote a column late Wednesday so unusual for her she told readers it was okay to double-check the byline.

“I’d vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act in the unlikely event that someone elected me to Congress,” Marcus wrote. “But the level of hyperbole — actually, of demagoguery — that Democrats have engaged in here is revolting.”

Marcus detailed the changes the Paycheck Fairness Act, which was stymied by Republicans in the Senate yesterday, as elaborations on the Equal Pay Act, signed by President John Kennedy, and the Lilly Ledbetter Act, signed by President Barack Obama in the early days of his administration.

Marcus largely approved of the changes — though she demurred that “I can understand the concerns of those who worry about floods of litigation and business decisions second-guessed by federal judges” — but argued that Democrats, fearful of losing the Senate, were trying to use the bill to pin Republicans against the ropes and stir up women voters for the 2014 midterms.

“There is a difference between opposing the Paycheck Fairness Act and opposing paycheck fairness,” Marcus wrote. “Politicians who choose to confuse the two may score a cheap political point, but it’s not a fair one.”
