Trump Responds to George H.W. Bush Book: He Wanted Me for VP in ’88

Donald Trump said in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press that George H. W. Bush‘s presidential campaign reached out to him and asked if he was interested in being their vice presidential candidate.
“[Bush campaign advisor] Lee Atwater was a very good friend of mine, he was a terrific guy and died at a very young age. And he came to me when I was quite young and he said, ‘you know, you’d be a great vice president. I said, really? Tell me about it.’”
“Lee said, ‘You’d be great, and you should do it, you should do it, I want to get back to you.’ And we talked about it on two occasions, but nothing ever came of it.”
Trump’s answer comes after The New York Times revealed that in an upcoming Bush 41 biography, Bush claims that Trump had reached out to them, not the other way around. The then-vice president “thought the overture strange and unbelievable.”
