Trump plays the birther card on Ted Cruz

    The DC Caller

    Jeff Poor
    8/11/2013

    Excerpt:

One of the most outspoken figures on the question of President Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president during the last presidential election cycle was real estate mogul Donald Trump.

In a five-minute interview aired on Sunday’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on ABC with Jon Karl, Trump revisited the birth certificate question, but this time he trained his sights on Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz’s eligibility.

“Why does that make me not serious?” Trump asked. “I think that resonated with a lot of people… I have no idea [if he was born in the United States]. I don’t know, was there a birth certificate? You tell me. You know some people say it was not his birth certificate. I’m saying I don’t know. Nobody knows and you don’t know, Jonathan. You’re a smart guy. You don’t know either.”

Karl later asked Trump about Cruz, to which Trump seemed to indicate he had similar questions about his eligibility as well.

“Well, if he was born in Canada, perhaps not.” Trump said. “I’m not sure where he was born… You’ll have to ask him that question, but perhaps not. I don’t know the circumstances. I heard somebody told me he was born in Canada. That’s really his thing.”

    Donald 'Birther' Trump Is Back!

    Excerpt:

Appearing on ABC News' This Week on Sunday (August 11), tycoon Donald Trump had this exchange with interviewer Jonathan Karl:

Karl: But you don't still question he [Obama] was born in the United States, do you?

    Trump: I have no idea.

Karl: But even at this point?

Trump: Well, I don't know. Was there a birth certificate? You tell me. You know, some people say that was not his birth certificate. I'm saying I don't know. Nobody knows. And you don't know, either, Jonathan. You're a smart guy, you don't know, either.

Karl: I'm pretty convinced he was born in the United States.

[vigorous exchange where Trump rolls over Karl's effort to correct himself and say he's totally, without question convinced.]

Trump: Jonathan, you said you're pretty convinced! OK, so let's just see what happens over time... [more vigorous exchange] ...well, you just said you're pretty sure, and if you're pretty sure that's not acceptable, because, you know, you can't be pretty sure, you have to be 100% sure.

Donald Trump did not become a billionaire by being stupid. He's smart enough to know when he doesn't know an answer (even after spending money to have the subject researched), and even smarter to say so openly, because this resonates with a public which is also smart enough to admit it doesn't really know the answer. Unlike Jonathan Karl and others in the dinosaur media who have swallowed the party line and are so ignorant about the subject that they don't even know they're ignorant about it.
