Ted Cruz will renounce Canadian citizenship

Hot on the heels of learning that he is a dual citizen of both Canada and the United States, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Monday evening that he plans to renounce his Canadian citizenship.
“Because I was a U.S. citizen at birth, because I left Calgary when I was 4 and have lived my entire life since then in the U.S., and because I have never taken affirmative steps to claim Canadian citizenship, I assumed that was the end of the matter,” Cruz said in a statement as he embarked on two weeks of travel in Texas during the congressional recess. “Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship. Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. Senator, I believe I should be only an American.”
On Sunday, the Morning News published a copy of Cruz’s birth certificate, along with a story reporting the fact that anyone born in Canada is automatically a citizen of Canada, just like anyone born in the United States is automatically a citizen of the United States. Earlier, Cruz’s office had disputed the notion that he had dual citizenship, and Cruz said, “I’m not going to get into the legal debate.”
In an interview with Cruz Monday, Mary Matalin, the Republican political commentator married to Democratic political commentator James Carville, seconded her husband’s opinion that among potential Republican presidential candidates, Cruz was the “most skilled, most threatening, most scary thing to Democrats,” and that must explain why questions were being raised about his Canadian birth and whether he meets the constitutional requirement that a president of the United States must be a “natural born citizen.”
Cruz believes he meets that requirement and it appears the weight of legal scholarship agrees with him. But there are dissenters, though they tend to come from the “birther” movement of the right and not the left. [...] More at Statesman. - Hat tip Aloha Analytics.
Cruz will renounce Canadian citizenship

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced Monday evening that he will renounce his Canadian citizenship, less than 24 hours after a newspaper pointed out that the Canadian-born senator likely maintains dual citizenship.
“Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship,” Cruz said in a statement. “Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.”
The Dallas Morning News wrote in a story posted late Sunday night that Cruz likely remains a Canadian citizen, by virtue of being born there to an American mother. Having never renounced that citizenship, Cruz was technically a Canadian and an American citizen, according to legal experts. [...] Continued at Washington Post. Also @ TheBlaze.
