Rand Paul: Nothing Wrong with Voter ID, But GOP Shouldn’t ‘Emphasize’

Senator Rand Paul recently raised eyebrows on the right when he said that Republican voter ID laws are “offending people” and the GOP can’t be too “crazy” on this issue. Well, on Sean Hannity‘s radio show today, Paul clarified his comments, explaining he thinks voter ID is fine, he just doesn’t want the GOP to over-emphasize it.
Paul said Democrats have unfairly blamed voter ID on voter disenfranchisement, but he believes felony voting restrictions, which disproportionately affect African-Americans, are a bigger tool of disenfranchisement. However, Paul argued, “Republicans should be emphasizing the good things we’re trying to do to try to help minorities vote instead of the things many minorities feel is directed at them, rightly or wrongly.”
