1912-11-20 (Nov. 20, 1912) Sudan Government Birth and Vaccination Certificate with atypical numeric date format.

WP_002117I own this African birth certificate and its one of my most cherished certificates of birth.  The form itself was manufactured in Arabic and English text.  The handwritten biodata is listed in Arabic and this includes the numbers.

The official date format in Sudan is the British DD/MM/YYYY (day/month/year) but this particular birth certificate lists dates in YYYY/MM/DD (year/month/day).  Sudan was administered by Britain and Egypt from the years 1899 thru 1956.

The date of birth listed on this birth certificate is November 20, 1912 or maybe 1913.  Arabic symbols for 2 (٢) and 3 (٣) are somewhat similar to each other (especially if you’re reading them as an American).

The document itself (which in an Extract of the original record of birth similar to those issued in the United States) appears to have been issued in the year 1914 (١٩١٤).   I’m not able to ascertain the precise date of issue because I don’t understand what the c-looking number symbol represents in ١٩١٤-c-٨.   The upside-down-v-looking number symbol is eight (8) and indicates the 8th day of the month.

The vaccination date (١٩١٤-c-١٥) is listed as the 15th day of some month (again the c-looking number) in 1914.

Its should also be noted here that this document also states that vaccination should be conducted within three months of birth and non-compliance renders the offender liable to a monetary fine.  After having read that I am now even more uncertain if the date of birth is listed as 1912 or 1913.  Readers are welcome and implored to judge for themselves (I lean towards 1912).

Skeptics have indicated that Barack Obama’s 1961 Coast Province General Hospital, Mombasa, British Protectorate of Kenya, Certificate of Birth is not genuine because the numeric date format used on the document is not the British DD/MM/YYYY (day/month/year).

If the skeptics are correct then is this Anglo-Egyptian Sudan birth certificate a fake?

  1. I forgot to ask this question in the report:

What does “P.T.” stand for when the documents quotes the following prices –

    “…liable to a fine not exceeding P.T. 100.”

“A copy may be obtained on payment of 5 P.T.”

I assume its an abbreviation for the type of currency but I cannot figure out the name of the currency.

    Any ideas?

  3. Greatkim says:

Ahh, have to redo it, sorry Lucas

ok, now read from right to left

redro emas eht ni daer yllautca si YYYY/MM/DD os, tfel ot thgir nettirw si cibarA

  4. @ Greatkim:

Yes, we know. Doesn’t change the fact that date format appears atypical for the then British administrated Sudan.

The date format listed on Obama’s 1961 CPGH British Protectorate of Kenya birth certificate may be atypical for a British-protectorate but doesn’t make the document it any less genuine than an Arabic script right-to-left written numeric date format listed on a British-administrated-Sudan birth certificate.

If you’ve got the time, and if you are feeling particularly smart today, tell us what the “P.T.” stands for because we really and truly do not yet know what it means.

  5. Some of the skeptics, such as Loren Collins, have pointed out that Obama’s 1961 Coast Province General Hospital, Mombasa, British Protectorate of Kenya, birth certificate is very ‘generic’-looking.

If that is the case then I would submit that this British-administrated-Sudan birth certificate is just as, if not more so, ‘generic’-looking.

Does that mean that the Sudan document is a fake?

  6. Voice of Reason says:

Sudan document done 100 years ago =/= A “Kenyan” one that you made yourself.
Naturally there are going to be differences.

    piastres. 1 Piastre = 1/100 Sudanese pound

  8. Greatkim says:

Anglo Egyptian Sudan’s currency was quite curious. British and Sudanese pounds (same value) for banknotes. Egyptian piastres for coins

    @ Lucas Daniel Smith:

your Anglo Egyptian Sudan document is an extract from an official register. Makes it far more credible than yours.
