Saint Nicholas Day is observed on the 5th or 6th of December in Western Christian countries and on the 19th of December in Eastern Christian countries using the old Church Calendar.
It appears that Santa Claus here in the US and in the UK derive from Saint Nicholas. The name Santa Claus itself is evidently derived in part from the Dutch Sinterklaas (the saint’s name in that language). It should also be noted that in Swiss folklore, St. Nicholas is known as Samichlaus.
Saint Nicholas is sometimes accompanied by Krampus who might be described as a bad Santa Claus who scares & punishes children who have misbehaved.
