Colony and Protectorate of Kenya – Certificate Issued Under the Native Registration Ordinance

If I remember correctly I found this document for sale online back in 2010.  I wanted to get my hands on it and examine it up-close.  Unfortunately when I went to buy it I found that someone else had already purchased it.

Here recently I found an old hard drive (a few of them) I used to use as backups and for saving images.  Looking through them I found what I think (I’m fairly certain) are two (2) images I saved from the 2010 online sale of the document (front and back).

This document, from the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya is a Certificate issued under the Native Registration Ordinance.  Part of the year is missing (says “19” after the Ordinance but is missing a small piece of the document after that) but I think this ordinance was enacted (or other official terminology if not enacted) in 1921.

What caught my eye and attention back in 2010 were the following:

(1) ->  fingerprint on the document, the left thumb impression

(2) ->  Kenya being referred to as a Protectorate

(3) ->  the date range of the document (or likely date range)

(4) -> the numeric date format

(5) -> the District is listed as Mombasa (and this was part of the form itself, not written in by hand)

(6) -> the Certificate number, or MSA (not sure what MSA means), 971830 is crossed out and replaced with a different number, 969830.

Those details are helpful in confirming the authenticity of Barack Obama’s 1961 Kenyan birth certificate.

I also tried to make out the handwriting on the certificate but was only able to identify a few words. (For the moment at least.  If I can ascertain more I’ll add it to the comment section of this report / article.)

-> The father’s name appears to be Nduia.  (At first I thought it was Ndwiga.)

-> The location appears to be Kiandani.  (I also consulted with someone else and they told me that the name “Ndwiga” can not possibly be from Kiandani unless there was an intermarriage.)

-> The tribe appears to be Mgiriama.

I looked further into the tribe name listed on the certificate and from what I gather it’s really the Giriama tribe.  Apparently Mgiriama means the person comes from the Giriama tribe. So instead of saying, for example, “he comes from Giriama,” you can simply say, “he is Mgiriama.”

I also consulted with someone else about the tribe and they told me that they think the person listed on the certificate is more likely from the Kamba tribe in Eastern Kenya and that the Kambas are neighbors to the coast (where the Giriama tribe is) and that they can speak both languages perfectly and also that intermarriage between them is very common.

Here’s the scan of the back side of the document which is headed with, Notes for the guidance of Emp[this part is missing but is likely Employing or Employment] … engaging Registered Natives.

I’d like to note also that I found (online in the book titled, Skinny Scarecrows: Forced Labor in Kenya Before the Forced Labour Convention) what appears to be an older version of this same type of Certificate (Certificate issued under the Native Registration Ordinance) which predates the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya.  It’s for a 1915 ordinance from the East Africa Protectorate (some of which later became the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya in 1920) in Nairobi:
